Five Framework Definitions
TILT
Transparency in Learning & Teaching: Every assignment includes explicit Purpose (why it matters), Task (step-by-step how), and Criteria (grading rubric). Enhanced with self-checks, CLG mapping, operational definitions.
Where: All 64 assignments have P/T/C sections
ICAP
Interactive > Constructive > Active > Passive: Cognitive engagement hierarchy. Interactive (d=0.76) = dialogue. Constructive (d=0.49) = generating new info. Active (d=0.31) = manipulating info.
Where: 44% Interactive (Labs Week 2), 24% Constructive (Mega-Maps)
DEL Cycle
Discover → Engage → Learn: Two-week module structure. Week 1: DISCOVER (online) + ENGAGE (F2F practice). Week 2: DISCOVER (online synthesis) + LEARN (F2F application with peer feedback).
Where: Assignment x.6 due 10 AM Thursday before x.7 lab at noon
Bloom's Taxonomy
Remember → Create: Six cognitive levels. Each module progresses from Remember (Norton readings) → Understand (InQuizzes) → Apply (Labs Week 1) → Analyze (Visual Notes) → Evaluate+Create (Mega-Maps, Labs Week 2).
Where: Module structure = Bloom's progression in 2 weeks
Cognitive Load Theory (CLT)
Managing Intrinsic/Extraneous/Germane Load: Visual skills scaffold from simple (M1 hierarchies ⭐) to complex (M8 hypergraph ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐). Clear instructions, worked examples, operational definitions reduce extraneous load. Synthesis tasks enhance germane load.
Where: Assignment 2.6 acknowledges "highest cognitive load" + provides scaffolding
Where to Find Examples in Course
| Element | Location in Course | Points |
|---|---|---|
| TILT P/T/C | Every assignment has Purpose, Task, Criteria sections with self-checks | 100% coverage |
| Interactive (ICAP) | All Lab Week 2 assignments (x.7): Peer feedback, RQ evolution | 440 pts (44%) |
| Constructive (ICAP) | Mega-Maps (x.6), Visual Notes (x.2, x.5): Generate new structures | 240 pts (24%) |
| Active (ICAP) | Norton readings (x.1), InQuizzes (x.4), Labs Week 1 (x.3) | 320 pts (32%) |
| DEL DISCOVER | Week 1 online: Module Overview, Norton, Visual Notes, InQuiz | 45 pts/module |
| DEL ENGAGE | Week 1 F2F: Lab Week 1 (x.3) - Practice with case studies | 20 pts/module |
| DEL LEARN | Week 2 F2F: Lab Week 2 (x.7) - Synthesis with peer feedback | 35 pts/module |
| Bloom's Remember | Norton readings (x.1): Textbook comprehension, key terms | 160 pts total |
| Bloom's Create | Mega-Maps (x.6) + Hypergraph RQ evolution (x.7) | 440 pts (44%) |
| CLT Scaffolding | Visual skills: M1 hierarchies → M8 hypergraph systems | Progressive |

Key Takeaway
This course applies five evidence-based pedagogical frameworks systematically across all 64 assignments—not as isolated features, but as an integrated system where each framework enhances the others' effectiveness. TILT transparency clarifies ICAP expectations. DEL timing coordinates engagement modes. ICAP progression requires Bloom's high levels. CLT scaffolding uses TILT to reduce load. Result: Course design grounded in learning science, validated through peer review (78% → 100%), documented with concrete examples.
Critical Course Metrics
Framework Integration Examples
- TILT + ICAP: Operational definitions in TASK section clarify Constructive mode requirements (prevents students from doing Active work)
- DEL + ICAP: Online DISCOVER = Constructive mode (individual synthesis), F2F LEARN = Interactive mode (collaborative refinement)
- ICAP + Bloom's: Interactive mode (Labs Week 2) requires Evaluate+Create levels (highest Bloom's)
- CLT + TILT: Transparency (clear instructions, examples) reduces extraneous cognitive load
- DEL + CLT: Two-week cycle provides distributed practice (spacing effect) vs. massed practice
- All 5 Frameworks: Assignment 2.6 (see Doc #06) demonstrates complete integration in single assignment
